HomeAid Northern California Board members Lori and Dave Sanson were honored to be chosen as the recipients of the San Francisco Business Times Philanthropy Award for Community Change and Impact for 2013.

When Dave and Lori Sanson founded DeNova Homes two decades ago, helping nonprofit organizations was a natural thing for them to do. They have been involved with HomeAid Northern California for over 10 years. Their first HomeAid project was the construction of a 6,000-square-foot facility for women and children on the Mission Solano transitional housing campus in Fairfield. In addition, DeNova Homes employees all volunteer at some level, with many providing expertise to the building of HomeAid shelters.

“Every time there is a need to help someone less fortunate, Dave and Lori step up because it is part of their DNA,” according to HomeAid Northern California Executive Director Cheryl O’Connor. They are the builder captains for the remodel of the STAND! For Families Free of Violence domestic violence shelter in Contra Costa County and lend their support to HomeAid events and food and gift drives.

“The two most important things you can provide people are food and shelter,” says Dave Sanson. Lori Sanson mentions that these are the people that are hardworking, but they just haven’t gotten that break they need to rebuild their lives. With HomeAid, we can build the shelters with service providers to provide hope and a hand up.

HomeAid is the largest nationwide provider of transitional housing in America. HomeAid was created and is supported by the building industry to address and solve the problem of homelessness. Working with Service Providers, HomeAid builds and maintains the shelters where the temporarily homeless learn the skills to re-enter the mainstream while living in dignified surroundings. The HomeAid model mobilizes members of the building industry to donate labor, materials and expertise, allowing the service provider to concentrate on funds for operating the shelter. These shelters include counseling and job training as core components of their programs – ultimately offering “a hand up, not a hand out.”
