Indoor/Outdoor Living Spaces

What we do at DeNova Homes better than any other builder is our understanding of indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces. We look to make the best use of this wonderful California weather and help our homeowners enjoy the doubling of livable and entertaining space with these “extra rooms”. Visit our current neighborhoods page on our website and you will quickly see that more than half of our homes offer exterior spaces to die for.

What better way to celebrate these spaces, than to entertain. With the end of summer in sight, we surveyed our team for the best end-of-summer recipe to share with you. The consensus is in. The winning recipe is easy to prepare, but oh-so good!

The Peach Caprese Salad stood out for its simplicity and use of summer peaches. If you’ve ever made traditional caprese salad, you know that it is a crowd favorite. This version amplifies the flavors with the addition of the summery sweet freshness of the peaches. Furthermore, you can try lightly grilling the peaches first. Simply slice the peaches lengthwise in round disc shapes, brush olive oil on both sides of the peach and lay it on a grill for 2 minutes on each side. Then assemble the salad as normal. For the recipe you can visit http://iowagirleats.com/2013/07/16/peach-caprese-salad/.

Thank you Sarah for sharing this wonderful recipe and happy entertaining to our DeNova Homes families!

The City of Angels: Gold, Mark Twain & Caverns

greenhorn-creekSurrounded by grapes, golf and adventure, the City of Angels, also known as Angels Camp, was once an appealing gold rush community, where nearly 4,000 miners camped in the one mile area from Angels Creek to Utica Park.

Angels Camp began as a tent town with many flimsy wooden structures and in 1855, the first fire took its toll by destroying almost everything. In rebuilding, many structures were built of rock with iron doors and roofs insulated with dirt and sand. Most of these building are standing today.

In the fall of 1865 a young Mark Twain, who was at the time living in a small cabin on “Jackass Hill”, overheard a story in a hotel bar, and later penned the now famous “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”.

Angels Camp is the only city incorporated in Cavaleras County. Calaveras county is famous for its caverns that have been visited and explored since 1850. Today there are three caverns; Moaning Caverns, Mercer Caverns and California Caverns where those with an adventuresome spirit can be lowered into the depths of the earth.

In 1938, The City of Angels was registered as a California Historical Landmark and its endless attractions and activities makes it a thriving community.

At the Angels Camp Museum and Carriage House you can admire a comprehensive collection of artifacts reflecting the rich and dynamic history of this community or a a fully functional late 19th Century Carpenters Shop is one of the Artisan Exhibits located in the Mining and Ranching building.

But if you’re looking for a hint of adventure, you can also schedule a Cave Walking Tour in the famous California Caves, where experienced, professional guides can lead you into the recently discovered “Jungle Room,” named for the array of crystalline “vines” covering the ceiling, many of them several feet long.

Regardless of what brings you to the City of Angels, be prepared for not wanting to leave! That’s why DeNova Homes will soon offer you several fantastic homes in this community. The Gallery at Greenhorn Creek offers residents spectacular views, access to 32 local wineries and a wide variety of outdoor activities only found in the heart of the Gold Country. Some might call it a vacation. We call it home.

Prepare your home for El Niño!

iStock_000002245783_LargeIs your home prepared for El Niño? It’s never too late! There are a few tips and tricks that will make your DeNova Home more comfortable and cozy for the rest of the season, especially considering the harsh effects of El Nino that are yet to come.

  1. Inspect and clean gas fireplaces as necessary. This might sound obvious to most people, but is never too late to remind you that the chimney of a wood-burning fireplace is going to need annual cleaning because of the buildup of soot and creosote.

  1. Clean wood cabinetry with a soft cloth and lemon oil, and do not use water. With cold weather and the humidity in the air, you want to make sure all your precious wood assets are protected and well taken care of.

  1. Remove frozen moisture from concrete surfaces as soon as possible. Make sure the products you use don’t have de-icing agents with damaging salts. You might want to keep an eye on the path that leads to the garage and in front of your doorstep – make sure it’s not slippery!

  1. Clean and test smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms. During the cold season, most people spend a lot more time at home, making sure all windows are closed to keep the cold air out. Well, don’t forget everything else stays in… so you want to make sure all gas and smoke will be promptly noticed!

  1. If there’s a little bit of temporary sunshine and warmth, open windows a crack or more to allow the house to breathe. Remember, spring time is not the only time your house needs fresh air, if you think about the amount of time we spend at home, with our families, during the season.

  1. Clean refrigerator and freezer coils. Winter is the best time to clean your refrigerator! Why? If not for any other reason, your fresh produce and delicacies won’t be exposed to the hot California summer weather!

  1. Clean sliding doors and window tracks, clean weep holes, check tightness of weather-stripping. This is particularly important to make sure the cold stays out and the warmth stays in – and at same time reduce energy costs!

  1. Inspect interior and exterior walls and surfaces for mildew. Eliminate any moisture source and properly remove it. Humidity is everywhere and and with it, mildew. Not just extremely unesthetic, mildew can cause permanent damage to your surfaces if not taken care of immediately and with proper care.

DeNova Homes strives to ensure service to their customers to be a pleasant experience and as easy as possible, therefore, if you need us for any service, make sure to contact us!

Gilroy is not just about Garlic

dtWe all know Gilroy is the Garlic Capital of the World, but there’s a lot more to say about the lovely southernmost city in Santa Clara, California.

Named after John Gilroy, a Scotsman, this lovely community was incorporated as the town of Gilroy in 1870 - its history, environment and community feel welcomes all visitors and embraces all who are lucky enough to live there.

However true that there’s something to be said about the famous Annual Garlic Festival in July, the “America’s premier summertime food festival”, a celebration of food, fun and family, where you can experiment several garlic delicacies, like garlic ice cream, it would be unfair not to mention its award-winning parks, golf course and recreation programs, or even Gilroy’s “urban forest” for which the City has won Tree City USA awards annually since 1979.

Gilroy is surrounded by the magical Monterey Bay, the beautiful San Joaquin Valley and the thrilling San Francisco Bay Area. Certainly, a hidden gem to treasure for years to come.
With its mild, Mediterranean climate, Gilroy is a well-established agricultural center in the United States, offering a wide variety of other produce like strawberries mushrooms. And let’s not forget about all the wineries in the surrounding areas.

There’s plenty of outdoor activities one can take advantage of, like the Gilroy Gardens Family Theme Park, specially designed to educate guests and to foster a greater appreciation of horticulture. Or why not visit the Christmas Hill Park, where the famous Garlic Festival is held?
Not to mention the Kirigin Cellars, of the most delightful morsels of Santa Clara County: 33 acres of rolling vineyards, nine acres of cricket lawns, over 1000 rose bushes and 100 redwood sequoias are surrounded by hills and rangeland.

But if you’re in the mood for some shopping, the Gilroy Premium Outlets, conveniently located directly off Highway 101 and just 20 miles south of Silicon Valley, featuring the largest collection of designer and brand name outlet stores in Northern California.

Are you a golfer? Then you have to try Gilroy Golf Course, some say the “Best 11 hole golf course in the U.S.”. Small undulating greens and wide generous, tree-lined fairways will await you at every tee.

That is why DeNova Home decided to invest in a wonderful community in Gilroy: the Tea Tree at Country Oaks Estates. Tea Tree Estates is situated in one of the areas premiere school districts, as well as, close to all of the shopping, dining and recreational opportunities the desirable west side of Gilroy has to offer.
